PSE (Product Safety Electrical Appliance and Material) is Japan's mandatory safety certification, administered under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act (DENKIANZEN). Electric food waste disposers are classified as specified electrical appliances (特定電気用品), requiring third-party testing by a designated conformity assessment body.

Products without the PSE diamond mark (◇) cannot be legally sold, imported, or distributed in Japan. Customs will detain non-compliant shipments.

What Is ETL?

ETL (formerly Electrical Testing Laboratories) is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) mark that evaluates products to UL (Underwriters Laboratories) standards. Both ETL and UL marks are accepted by US retailers, code authorities, and enforcement agencies. Neither is technically legally mandated by federal law, but most major US retailers (Target, Home Depot, Amazon) require one as a condition of sale.

In Canada, the CSA mark (or equivalent NRTLs listing to Canadian standards) is required for retail. Shihao's ETL-certified models can be extended to cover Canadian markets through cETL listing.

Korea: KC Certification

What Is KC?

KC (Korea Certification) is South Korea's mandatory safety mark, governed by the Electrical Appliances and Consumer Products Safety Control Act, administered by KATS (Korean Agency for Technology and Standards). Electric food waste disposers are designated products requiring mandatory KC registration and factory audit.

Key Operational Requirement

Europe: CE + ERP

CE Marking

CE marking is mandatory for all electrical products sold in the European Economic Area (EEA). Unlike PSE or KC, CE is a self-declaration — the manufacturer or importer declares conformity with applicable EU Directives and is responsible for the technical file. However, in practice, third-party lab testing is strongly recommended and often contractually required by European distributors.
